Farm sittin’ in Strathroy

MEEKA & HER CATS

One extremely smart pup and her herd of cats. What’s a border collie supposed to do when there are no sheep?

For the past 3 weeks we’ve been farm sittin’ in Southern Ontario, near Strathroy. This place was a lot like our farm. There were 4 horses, about 15 barn cats, a 5 month old border collie and 1 house cat to look after along with a big yard and vegetable garden.

It was a great place to get our animal fix in and so much easier to do chores when you don’t have to work! Horse wise, the 4 were really easy to handle but they required a fair amount of maintenance including about 2 hours a day of stall cleaning....that was Dave’s job. Although he didn’t mind doing it, he wasn’t altogether sad when it ended :-)

We both had our hands full keeping Meeka, the pup entertained. Been a while since we’ve been around a young dog, especially one as smart as this girl. She loves people so always wanted to be around us and always wanted to play with stuff. Who knows how many times we threw the frisbee for her but I do know it would have been lots more if she actually gave it up. She still hasn’t grasped the concept of “Drop it” and in 3 weeks, we might have made a small dent on that....I hope!

Chow time for the 15 plus barn cats was always interesting. Some how we managed to divide and conquer and get some food into all of them without too many internal disagreements. After 3 weeks we really got know their personalities and a few of them were really sweet but I don’t think they would have been happy if I kidnapped them and sentenced them to life in a trailer. :-(

And oh yeah, they had a big vegetable garden. That’s one thing I really miss about farm life. There’s nothing better than eating veggies just picked out of the garden. Fresh green beans, broccoli, peppers and tomatoes...sooooo good!

Being on the farm for 3 weeks was extremely enjoyable and we’re both glad that Anne & Ed took a chance on us and gave us the opportunity to look after their home and their 4 legged kids!
