Trip #3 (2010-2011) - Smokies, South Carolina, Florida, New Orleans, Mississippi flooding

Summary

We left Ontario on Oct 17, 2010 and crossed into the states at the Port Huron border. Our only plan for this trip was our final house sitting job for Mike in Andee in Costa Rica. We were scheduled to fly out of Orlando on January 22, 2011 so until then, the plan was to hike, fish and stay as warm as possible.

Some of the highlights on the way to Florida were hiking in Cumberland Gap National Park, KY and Smoky Mountain National Park, TN. We also had a great time fishing in South Carolina at one of our favourite beaches in Huntington Beach State Park.

Once in Florida we explored St. Augustine, did tons of fishing and lots of catching in Cape Canaveral and Sebastien Inlet. We’re becoming addicted to Sheepshead (it’s a very tasty fish!) I also finally got up the courage to tow the trailer and despite the tire mishap, all went well.

Arrived in Costa Rica on January 22 and returned on Feb 27. It was another excellent experience and that’s all documented in a separate BLOG if you’re interested.

When we got back to Florida we decided to head west and see some new places before we had to be back in Canada.  It was very enjoyable trip, the best part was the week we spent in New Orleans exploring the French Quarter, that’s a place everyone should explore at least once, wow, what an experience that was!

Spent a little time in the North East corner of Texas before heading north. Experienced some wild weather there, a little too close to tornados for my liking one day. On our way north, the wild weather continued but now it’s flooding that we have to worry about. The Mississppi River was overflowing and it was almost up to the top of the I-57 bridge when we crossed it into Illinois on April 30. Two days later, they blew the levies. Timed that just right!

Once we got out of the floods we took some time to visit friends in Luddington, MI and made it back to Canada on May 11.

We spent the summer with friends and family, did some cottage renovating for friends in Grand Bend, cat sat in Cambridge, Farm sat in Strathroy. Best spring, weather wise in years and the summer of 2011 was seriously hot.  In the fall we headed back to Powassan to house and cat sit and the nice weather continued.

Instead of heading south in the fall again, we decided to hang out in Ontario until February 2012 and then beeline it south to Texas. To keep busy we house sat for Al & Gloria in Newmarket for three weeks, visited family and friends and then splurged on a 2 week beach vacation in Puerto Plata, DR. Nice way to end our winter.
