Fantastic Fall in Northern Ontario

US - Loving this nice warm fall. Great scenery everywhere!

So where are we now? Powassan, just south of North Bay. We’re back house and cat sitting at the same place we were at last fall. We got here right after our farm sit in Strathroy ended at the end of August and we’ll probably be done this weekend. The people we’re house sitting for are returning from Gjoa Haven, Nunavit so Mother nature has to be kind in order for them to fly back on schedule.

We really enjoyed being here last year and we were very happy to be asked back. The house is in the country, nice and private here. It’s a great area to get out and be active. Lots of lakes and rivers to canoe and the biking is awesome! The terrain is quite hilly, makes for great work outs.

Weather wise, couldn’t have asked for a nicer fall. September and the first half of October were hot and sunny, very little rain. Thanksgiving weekend was gorgeous, highs in the mid 20’s C, almost record breaking for around here. Compared to the crappy, cold and rainy weather last year, this fall’s weather was fantastic.

Normally we’d already be on our way back down south to avoid the cold Canadian winters but we decided to change things up a bit. Tired of Florida....it’s too flat and it’s never been that warm when we’ve been there anyways so that’s not really a draw. Instead, we want to see more of the western half of the US, especially their national parks in Arizona, Colorado, Utah etc. but weather wise, you can’t really do that in the winter. Plus, we have to work around the US travel requirements, Canadians can only stay in the US for 6 months.

So, the plan now is to stay in Canada until about mid January...not really looking forward to being in the white crap :-( and then head directly down to South Texas. Stay there until it gets warm enough to head north and then travel up the east side of the mountains back to Canada. We should be able to get in lots of hiking, so many great parks to explore next spring and summer. One thing we want to do for sure is hike down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, stay for a few nights and then hike back up. Lots of new and interesting places to experience...can’t wait!

When we’re done here, we’ll probably spend some time visiting family and friends in various locations and with any luck, we’ll get another short term house sit or two. All we know for sure is that we will be house sitting for Dave’s brother in Newmarket Dec 15 - Jan 5th. It’ll all work out one way or another...keep you posted!
