Very urban RVing

RIVER RANCH RV RESORT - Can’t get much more urban than this. Like camping in a parking lot.

Next destination, urban camping near San Antonio. Compared to all the small, quiet little RV parks we’ve stayed at on the gulf coast, this one was quite a change. The River Ranch RV park in New Braunfels (about 20 minutes north of San Antonio) was located right on the Guadalupe River under 2 very busy overpasses of I-35. Spotless park, but far from peaceful with all the traffic noise. We were prepared for that, a fan on at night blocked out the noise so sleeping wasn’t a problem.

Why’d we go somewhere so urban? Well we had a bunch of stuff to do/get before we head further north and west and this location had all the stores and services we needed. #1 thing to get done, get the AC fixed in the truck. It had completely stopped working and the entire unit in had to be replaced. Chalk up another $1,000 repair bill but I’m sure it’ll be worth every penny when driving thru miles of desert in 100F plus heat in the weeks to come.

We’d never been to San Antonio before and I really wanted to go see the famous River Walk and the Alamo while we were here. Unfortunately our timing was off, Fiesta started on April 19 and continued daily until April 29. That means that an already busy urban area is even more crowed and congested. I still think it would have been fun to experience some of Fiesta but I could tell Dave really wasn’t anxious to fight the traffic or the crowds in this heat (it was at least 90F the first 3 days). If I’d dragged him there he would have been miserable which would have made me miserable so screw that plan. When we’re back next year we’ll try to get there before Fiesta starts.

Managed to make up for that by spending a gorgeous, sunny and slight cooler day up in Luckenbach, TX in the middle of nowhere in hill country, about 90 minutes drive north and west of New Braunfels. Met up with our friend Frank V from Austin and his fiance Torie to watch a free, outdoor country music show. Country music isn’t really our favourite thing but the first band up, Bugaboo was pretty good. More southern rock than country. Turns out Frank’s next door neighbour was the drummer and his girlfriend, the chello player, is from Toronto. Anyways, it was great to catch up with Frank and be outside on such a nice day. The people watching here was pretty good too, lots of bikers in attendance with some interesting machines.
