Grand Bend Wildlife

Well it’s finally warming up here but man, April sure wasn’t a nice month. Snow, ice storm and colder than normal almost the entire month. And yeah, lots of cloudy rainy days.

We have had a few warm days but they’ve been few and far between. The leaves aren’t even out on all the trees yet and the redbud and magnolias are full of buds just waiting to bloom. Took these pics today, in a few days these trees should be gorgeous.

Despite it being a cool spring, there are still plenty of flowers out in the gardens here. Lots of daffodils, narcissus and hyacinths along with a number of other flowers I’m not exactly familar with. If you feel the need for some flower power, check out these pics.

Took advantage of the nicer/warmer days to get in some biking. From the house to the Pinery provincial park and back is about 30 miles/48 K, give or take a few depending on where in the park we biked. There’s a great paved trail along Hwy 21 between Grand Bend and the Park entrance so most of the time we were away from traffic.

For those of you not familar with this park it’s right on Lake Huron and has a huge beachfront. Not nearly warm enough to go swimming but I did get my feet in the water (VERY COLD!) on this beautiful afternoon a few days ago. I sure wish I had my paddle board and a wet suit because the lake is rarely this calm.

We’ve been surprised by the wildlife here. There’s a fox, or what we think is a pair of foxes that regularly patrol this neighbourhood. They don’t seem very afraid of people, in fact they just walk by you if you happen to be in their path. It’s a little unnerving at first but they seem perfectly healthy…just bolder than what a typical fox would be.

Here’s some pics of it’s first visit, I actually followed it around to the neighbours yard after it went thru ours.

2nd close up visit, I was walking back from picking up the mail and the fox turned into the driveway. It stopped and looked at me…then just kept on going by, giving me that “What you looking at?” look... could have cared less I was just a few feet away from it. Then I followed it back to the wood pile where it seems to hunt and then it took off across the field. Not sure if it’s the same fox both times but the one in the 2nd set of pics looks a bit darker….hard to say. Such beautiful animals!

Then there was the beaver…yes beaver! We were out on one of our walks on the beach just across the road from the house when I saw what I thought was just driftwood floating until it turned direction. What the heck? I have spent ALOT of time on Lake Huron and have never seen a beaver on these beaches.

It wasn’t too far from shore and we followed it for quite a ways as it continued to swim north. It came into shore a couple of times for a rest and quick grooming as long as we kept our distance. Any time we tried to get closer, it went back in the water.  Got some decent shots of it though with the camera zoom on.

Dave says “Damm beaver, no wonder Lake Huron is so big!”

Here’s some other pics from the past few weeks.
