I almost can’t believe I’m saying this but we finally left Port O’Connor on Thursday, May 30th. We hooked the truck up for it’s first tow with the new engine and headed north to an RV park in Matagorda Bay. Only a 2 hour drive but it was the perfect way to see how the truck would perform. Happy to report, all’s well!
We had originally planned to go to San Antonio to see the famous river walk etc. but they got 12 inches of rain there in one day on May 24th which caused all kinds of flash flooding and some damage so we thought we’d better not. Plus, going there would have been a 3 hour drive west and since we’re not planning to continue west, would have likely sucked another $500 -$1,000 out of our pockets. We’ll save that visit for another road trip.
So we decided to be frugal and just head north and east, stay by the water and fish some more. Plus it’s friggin’ hot and humid here. The regular temps have been in the high 80s and low 90s but with the humidity it’s well over a 100F. The only place we don’t sweat is in the trailer when we’re sitting still. The air conditioner goes almost non stop just to keep the temperature at about 78. I love the heat but even I don’t think I could handle living here in the dead of summer when it’s over a 100F plus the humidity. No wonder people move slow!
Too bad the water here in Matagorda isn’t very inviting, it’s murky and it’s been windy so it’s quite wavy. Plus, some sort of seaweed is washing up big time making the beaches a mess and fishing a challenge. Oh well, we’re still enjoying being out side and trying to catch something. So far, no keepers but we and others on the pier here have been catching lots of black tip sharks! Yes sharks! This breed apparently swims in schools so there’s a bunch around (another good reason not to swim in the water here!) The ones we’ve hooked have been less than the 24” minimum to keep but with any luck, we’ll catch a bigger one before we leave on Monday. We really like fresh shark fillets.
