Mississippi

SPRING IN MISSISSIPPI - Looks and feels like late June back in Ontario

Spent 4 nights at the Gulf Islands National Seashore in Ocean Springs Mississippi. Only took about 90 minutes to get here from Foley, AL one of our shorter travel days.

We made this a pit stop on our way west because the price was perfect. $16/night but the amenities are basic, just water and electric, and bath houses which were somewhat run down. Sites here were quite spacious but since they were in a wooded area and near marshes, the bugs, the no seeums, were brutal. Especially when the temperatures were in the high 80s and the humidity a few days was 100%. Couldn’t even sit outside and enjoy yourself without getting swarmed and the bastards are so small they eventually come in thru the screens to destroy what little sanctuary and peace you think you have in the trailer.

We had to keep moving to get relief from them so that’s what we did. Spent one day in Biloxi checking out the area and casinos. Dave needed to get his Texas hold ‘em poker fix in so he spent the next day scratching that itch at the Beau Rivage, one of the nicer casinos there. Unfortunately this time, he gave away more $$$ than he got! I on the other managed to win $25 at slots. Just about enough to pay for lunch.

This part of Mississippi sustained some pretty significant damage by hurricane Katrina. There’s still lots of evidence of that around but they seem to have done a good job cleaning up and trying to rebuild. That oil spill last year sure added insult to injury to all these coastal towns so I feel like our travels along here and the money we’re spending as tourists is helping...at least a little bit.

The park and city also set up a great 9 mile bike loop thru the park, the town of Ocean Springs and along the beaches in the area. Not sure why more place don’t do this because it was a great way to see the area. Plus while you bike...no bugs!!!!
