American Thanksgiving in Georgia

OUR CAMPSITE - At Fort McAllister Historic State Park, Richmond Hill, GA

Once again, we forgot all about the US Thanksgiving holiday long weekend in November. Going camping seems to be the way a lot of southerners prefer to spend this long weekend so campgrounds, especially the popular ones right on the beach, get booked months in advance.

But lucked out and found 5 nights available over the holiday at Fort McAllister Historic State park in Richmond Hill, Georgia, about 40 minutes south of Savannah. It’s not on the beach but was on our way south, about only about 4 hour drive from Murrell’s Inlet, SC.  It’s close to the Ogeechee river and marshes so plenty of nice scenery and places to check out.

The campsites here were the largest we’ve stayed in yet and the most private due to all the trees. So even though the place was full for Thanksgiving, mostly with families from Georgia, we felt kinda secluded. Saw lots of deep fryers for turkey....even if I ate turkey I can’t see how that would be good??? Not to mention messy to clean up, especially camping!

Didn’t play tourist much here, already did Savannah last year and although it was pretty, we didn’t think it was worth exploring again. Instead, we decided to get our beach fix in and go back to Tybee Island for one day. We’d were there last year as well, but in our life, sun, ocean and sand trumps old houses any day! Plus it was warmer this visit than last years.

When we walked on the beach, we got an amazing dolphin show. At first we could see 4 or 5, just cruising off shore and then a couple of them started playing. They were jumping right out of the water, chasing each other around...couldn’t wipe the smiles off our faces as we watched for about 15 minutes. And, to top the experience off, I actually captured a decent picture of 2 of them out of the water with my tiny little, Canon, digital camera! I was thrilled to get it...talk about perfect timing and tons of luck!

So check out that picture and a few others from the area in the ALBUM.
