The Holidays in Cape Canaveral, Florida

Merry Christmas! We’re on the beach in shorts….HAPPY!

So it’s 2010 and we just spent the past 16 days at the Jetty park campground in Port Canaveral Florida where all the big cruise ships leave from. It’s right beside Cape Canaveral and Cocoa Beach, all situated on the Atlantic coast.

We missed spending the holidays with all our family and friends back home but it was fun to celebrate Christmas in shorts on the beach. New years eve we actually went out and rang in 2010 on the Cocoa Beach fishing pier. It was quite the party with lots of people watching.  Nice to be outside to enjoy the blue moon that was shining that night!

Even though this area is famous for the Kennedy Space Centre and the shuttle launches, we didn’t do a single spacey thing while we were here. To be honest, we just weren’t that interested in that stuff. We had too much fun hanging out near the campground.

The campground was in an excellent location! 5 minute walk to the beach or the fishing pier. Good biking around town, everything we needed was close by. So we spent most of our days on the beach...unfortunately there weren’t many days warm enough to work on the tan. Most required bundling up. Dave did manage to get in some boogie boarding on one of the nicer afternoons which was only in the high 70s. Not nearly warm enough for me to get in the water.

The most I got in the water was New Year’s Eve day when we tried surf fishing. We had to walk out about crotch deep in order to cast our far enough in the waves. The water was  COLD as far as I was concerned but a necessary evil in order to fish.  It was one of the nicest, warmest days of our stay though so it was it was doable. Turned out to be worth it because Dave caught a 16” Sheepshead. So we had Sheepshead for New Year’s Eve dinner and it was really good! You’ll have to look at the pics to see what it looked like and why they’ve been given such an unappetizing name.

Fishing has been a lot of fun despite the many hours spent shivering in cold wind with nothing to show for it. Met a lot of interesting locals and picked up many tips. It’s more social than I thought it would be.  Given up on keeping track who’s ahead, us or the fish but I’m sure it’s the fish.

Also spent a really nice afternoon with long time friends of my Dad’s in Titusville. Bob and Fran had us over for a lunch of home made clam chowder (so good!) and salad with all kinds of extra munchies. Then to top it off, cherry cheesecake, Dave’s fav. Didn’t really have room for it but managed to squeeze in a piece each. YUMMY! We rolled home after that.
