Spring in Grand Bend, Ontario

Welcome to Grand Bend AKA the Sun, Surf capital of Ontario, who knew???

Arrived at the cottage (owned by our friends Sue and Paul) on May 1st and we were busy, busy. Lots of cleaning, window washing and painting going on despite both of us being sick. Caught a nasty cold while we were in Waterloo at the end of April and although Dave got rid of his in a week, mine lasted most of May and ended up in bronchitis. Fun wow! Nice to finally be able to exercise without coughing up a lung after a week on antibiotics.

Once we got thru the 1st couple of cold weeks, summer seemed to arrive and stay as of the May 24 long weekend.  Lots of beautiful days in the mid to high 20’s C and even quite a few in the 30’s C. One of the nicest springs in years, perfect weather to be on a lake front cottage in Grand Bend. What’s even more surprising is how warm Lake Huron got due to the early heat and a mild winter. We were in swimming on May 26th and none of my body parts went numb or turned blue. And that’s with my now 50 year old bod! Even as a kid with no sense or feeling, I don’t remember Lake Huron being this nice so early...I only remember it being like ice! Been in quite a few times since...just too hot not to jump in and cool off.

Had lots of opportunity to explore the area, biked to the Pinery Provincial park before it got stupid busy with campers and have spent lots of time walking/biking around Grand Bend. Never really had the opportunity to do that when we partying there in my university days.....or should I say I had other priorities then :-)

The main street has been totally renovated and it, along with a number of improvements over the past couple of years have now earned it a designation as a Blue Flag Beach.  It’s still quite the party town on weekends and the human scenery on the beach and main street is pretty darn good!!! Oh to be 20 again...

The sunsets on the Lake here are stunning. Apparently, National Geographic has described them as one of the top 10 in the world. Sue’s grandparents called their cottage/home “Sunset Lodge” and believe me, it’s very appropriately named!

Check out the pics and you’ll see exactly what I mean.
