Escazu is apparently considered to be one of the most posh and upscale areas in the city of San Jose by the Ticos (local Costa Ricans). Check out this description of the area in the Go to Costa Rica website. While yes it’s true, the US ambassador has his residence in Escazu, there are also some very poor people living here. It’s quite the mix of haves and have nots from what we can see. It’s also not what I’d consider to be a very touristy area but, because of all the expats from the US and Canada that live here, there is quite a bit of English spoken. There’s also lots of shopping, for example, the huge Multiplaza mall and big box type stores like Price Mart (Costco) and the Hipermas (Walmart).
We feel quite safe walking around in the daytime (wouldn’t do it at night though) so today we hiked down to the local Fischel drug store to pay Mike and Andee’s utility bill for them while they’re gone. It’s one of the house sitting duties we have, they leave us the cash, we just have to get it to the right place. Weird to pay a bill like that at a drugstore but that’s how it’s done here.
On the way back, we stopped at Laly’s, a typical Costa Rican restaurant that we’ve been to on previous stays here. Never in a million years would I think to go there if I was just walking by. But inside it’s a pretty interesting place, and packed with locals which says a lot about the food there, it’s really good! It would be nice to have some pics of the inside to show you but we decided taking pics wouldn’t have been very cool. Figured we wouldn’t flaunt our “gringoness” to the locals anymore than necessary. :-) Lunch was good, cold cervezas even better!
As we walked, I took a bunch of pictures to show you the Escazu area we’re calling home for 5 and half weeks.
