Turns out that all the RV parks and campgrounds have to close down on Oct 15th. It’s a Maine state law. But the owners of the Pumpkin Patch RV park we were staying at let us stay 2 extra nights past that while we got air bags put in the truck. They shut down the bathrooms and most of the facilities except for laundry and the place was pretty much deserted except for us, the owners and a few of the remaining work campers that were helping out with the park shut down. It was quiet that’s for sure.
We had originally planned to go to Acadia National Park and Bar Harbour but found out from a fellow camper that Bar Harbour is a VERY popular cruise ship port with all the leaf peepers. They said they could only take about an hour of it and then they bailed. That’s all Dave had to hear, no way did he want to drive 90 mins to be in a big crowd.
So we took the road less travelled and headed a bit further south of Bangor on Highway 1. It takes you along the ocean beside some picturesque towns like Belfast which had a a great waterfront. You can walk along the marina and thru this huge ship yard. Lots to look at, perfect day for pics like this.
Of course we had to stop for drinks at a local bar at happy hour including a bowl of clam chowder.
While we were there we discovered that there was a walkway all along the river, the name of which is a mouthful for sure. So we came back the next day to do it but it was unfortunately overcast.
Oh well it was still worth getting out for the exercise to walk the 2.2 miles to the still functioning rail station in City port and then back again to Belfast.
So now we head south to warmer climates, I see some long driving days in our future.
