We spent 4 nights in the area (Raton history/info here) and finally got in some good hiking in nearby  Sugarite Canyon State park. It was originally a coal mining town but was subsequently abandoned once other fuels began to replace coal as an energy source. Check out the BLOG!

Our site had amazing views

You can see how the canyon drops off behind us, Dave thought it would be cool to drop the back deck….uh no thanks! Plus there was no where for him to stand to do that, thank God!

The high elevation didn’t seem to bother us too much.

Someone with artistic talents made the bath house an interesting work of art.

There were real bears in the area too, warned to clean and store BBQs overnight.
