Wild Horses on the NC coast

We kinda back tracked a bit north for our next stay in Chocowinity NC but we went 90 minutes closer to the coast. Why not further south? Well we have reservations at State Parks in South Carolina from Nov 10 - Nov 29 and had to find somewhere in between to “kill” 6 nights.

After doing much research, ruling out the expensive places and reading a lot of bad reviews of parks between Selma NC and Mytrle Beach SC we ended up at a place called Twin Lakes RV park in Chocowinity NC. Pretty good reviews and we got to stay for 5 nights at half price ($22.50/night) with the Passport America discount. The park itself is huge and we got a full hook up site in between two of their cabins so it’s nice and private from that perspective since they’ve been empty since we got here on Nov 4.

The November weather this past Sunday and Monday has been unseasonally warm, even for here. Almost 80F both days so we took a 5 mile hike around nearby Goose Creek State Park on Sunday. Nothing horribly exciting but got us out for a walk on a beautiful day.

Here’s a few pics from the Park.

Monday we drove 90 minutes south the Beaufort NC where we took the Island Express Ferry over to Shackleford Banks. It's a pristine, undeveloped, 9 mile long island that is the southern-most barrier island in the Cape Lookout National Seashore. It’s promoted as one of the best shelling beaches but the appealling thing about it for us, was the chance to see some of the wild horses that live there. The current herd count is 124 and we were privledged enough to see at least 8 different ones, maybe 12. I think we saw the same group of 4 in two different locations.

You weren’t supposed to get any closer than about 50ft to them but this guy didn’t care we were there, he just kept coming closer.

Two of my favourite pictures.

It was one of my favourite days of our travels so far, check out the rest of the pics from our island visit.
